Then, I highly recommend Sue Cowleys' book- How to survive your first year of teaching. 

I first met Sue Cowley many years ago giving us a talk at University. Sue is a Drama teacher and it shows in her performance. She is animated and kept us on our toes. 

This book is packed full of tips for the new teacher. It is for teachers who want to teach at Secondary Schools. 

If you are looking for a book that is related to the first time teacher, then this book is for you. Especially, if you are going straight at the deep end of teaching and no one to guide you.

Keeping a Journal

So, throughout my teaching career, I have always encouraged my students to keep a reflective journal. This will help students to keep a daily record of day-to-day events. Keeping a journal will also help students to remember things they have done and how they could have improved it. A journal is good for self reflection. How did you feel when you did certain tasks/activities? You can see how far you have come from your journey. The person you are today may not be the person you were when you first started your journey. You will be able to see yourself evolve and grow and how you have progressed during that time. At the end of your academic journey, you can look back at key events, for example, things to celebrate and when lessons were learnt. Whats in a journal? Your journal can be anything you want it to be. This is a record of your personal journey, or a journey to look back on and learn from. Students are notoriously known for not having any money. So, it makes sense to save money where they can. I told my students about Unidays. Which is a website that has many popular brands that students/teachers can get discounts. Some students have heard of Unidays whilst others have not. Teachers and students can also get discounts from Adobe products. However, saying this, the School/College usually gives free access to Adobe products.
